Is This Really The End?

SavePolaroid!

I’m sure most of you know by now that the company Polaroid has discontinued their Polaroid film, but it really just hit me today, because I went out and got yet another Polaroid camera from a garage sale and really wanted to go out an use it in this beautiful rainy day. I’m so sad. I loved listening to the sound of the film coming out from the camera and the anticipation of watching the image slowly appear from nothing. I also, for some strange reason, loved the smell of the chemicals coming from the developing film, although that was probably not such a great idea.

+

I did, however, find this website SavePolaroid.com which is trying to find another company that can possibly take over the production of the film or save Polaroid from dying altogether. They have created a PDF package in which you can take action to help save it. Not sure how far ahead this whole thing is, but I guess it’s always worth a shot to try and do something if you are a Polaroid enthusiast.

American Apparel launching a line of nail polish.

American Apparel nail polish

American Apparel nail polish

I’ve never been a huge fan of American Apparel… not because I don’t like their stuff, but more because they don’t fit me as well as other brands. They do have some great guy briefs (for men, not girls), socks, tights, and leggings. Many of you might know they sell vintage and new eyewear, magazines, bags, and full-on coats. All made here in L.A. The latest is a new line of nail polish which will likely be swept up without question by the heaps of hipster followers world wide. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be buying some too, so I’m not knocking the line. All of the colors are inspired by the AA headquarters downtown. One in particular, is said to be a knock-off of all-sold-out Chanel’s Jade, which has already been knocked-off by Essie’s Mint Candy Apple. AA claims “a minty green color called Office was matched to the color of an accounting notepad found on the seventh floor of American Apparel’s headquarters.” Whatever. Suburban moms will likely stick to their Essie and the cool kids on the block can buy the same color in their preferred AA packaging. Everyone’s happy. [the Frisky]

I was reading over one of my favorite blogs, Book By Its Cover, when I came across this AMAZING handmade book by Michele Chun and Miya Saito of Sometimes Books. It’s a limited edition series of 25 all handmade in pink and white cardstock. Great concept, great idea = great book. I hope there’s a sequel.

I was really excited when I read that Spike Jonze is collaborating on a new collection for Opening Ceremony. I loved the Chloe Sevigny collection last year, and even bought this rose-printed dress that looked straight out of an 80s Wallmart. Here’s the story –

Director Spike Jonze and Opening Ceremony co-owner Humberto Leon are in Tokyo this week promoting the launch of their fashion collaboration for Jonze’s movie “Where the Wild Things Are.” On Tuesday, the pair hosted a screening of the film, followed by an after party at hip nightclub Le Baron de Paris, which attracted the likes of actress Rinko Kikuchi. Guests at the party donned masks of the film’s characters as they let loose on the dance floor. The next day, Jonze signed autographs and fielded questions from fans at Opening Ceremony’s Tokyo store. “Japan is a really fun place, and launching the collection here feels very natural,” Leon said. “Japan is so accepting of fun merchandise that it feels right.” This article care of WWD.

We’re not worthy!

December 17th, 2009 by LIGER

During my trip to London in June, I had the pleasure of meeting legend typographer Neville Brody at the launch party for Wallpaper Magazine’s Sex issue which ended at the Shoreditch House. I wanted a photo with him, which he refused, and we became friends from then on. In any case, this is just a little post to pay some serious respect to his skills and overall radness.

In Living Color

December 15th, 2009 by LIGER

I loved that show when I was a kid. But that’s not what this post is about. A couple of days ago, while browsing the ApartmentTherapy website, I stumbled upon the company WoollyPocket. They make planters that make plants into wall-art. Plants billowing over like Rapunzel’s locks. As soon as I find a new place to live (yes, it’s moving time), this will be one of my first purchases.

Dansk

December 15th, 2009 by LIGER

THING has been holding strong through the “cold” L.A. winter to get ready for 2010. We’re working on a new pattern project which will be completed mid-January. I am almost done with an illustration that will appear in the next issue of Dansk magazine. If you haven’t heard of this magazine, try to find one. It’s a mix of 10/Pop/Dazed/ID, all rolled into one. It’s hard to find in the states, but check it out here. I will post the art work for the article once the magazine comes out.

THING supports the blind.

December 15th, 2009 by LIGER

Our checkbooks finally arrived and we are pleased to announce they are designed for those that are visually impaired. Yes, it’s true. The font and lines are HUGE and embossed. They look pretty 70s which makes them even better. Here’s a snapshot from the catalog.
